How to Remove Rust from a Chrome Towel Rail or Radiator

Chrome is a popular finish for towel rails and radiators because it provides a stylish, reflective appearance while also helping to protect the metal underneath. However, like any plated finish, chrome can become affected by moisture, damage or corrosion over time.

Small areas of surface rust can sometimes be removed with careful cleaning and maintenance. There are several reasons why rust may develop on a chrome towel rail or radiator:

• Damage to the chrome finish: Scratches, chips or other damage can expose the steel beneath the chrome. When the exposed metal comes into contact with moisture and oxygen, corrosion can begin.
• Condensation: During warmer months, the central heating may be switched off and the towel rail can remain cold. Warm, humid bathroom air can then condense on the cooler surface, leaving moisture that may eventually contribute to corrosion.
• Heating system corrosion: Sludge and contaminants within a central heating system can contribute to internal corrosion. In severe cases, this can result in small perforations or leaks, which may subsequently cause external rust.
• Constant exposure to moisture: Regularly hanging very wet towels or clothing directly over a towel rail can leave the surface continually damp. Over time, this can affect the finish and increase the risk of corrosion.
• Lack of regular cleaning: Keeping your towel rail clean and dry is one of the simplest ways to help maintain the chrome finish and reduce the likelihood of surface corrosion.

What You Will Need

Before you begin, prepare the following:

• Mild washing-up liquid or soap
• White vinegar
• A soft-bristled, old toothbrush
• Two clean microfibre cloths
• Aluminium kitchen foil
• Clean water

Step 1 - Make Sure the Towel Rail Is Cool

Switch off the heating and allow the towel rail or radiator to cool completely before cleaning.

We recommend waiting at least 20 minutes after switching off the heating before starting. Never attempt to clean or treat a hot radiator.

Step 2 - Clean the Surface Thoroughly

Start by giving the entire towel rail or radiator a thorough clean using warm water with a small amount of mild washing-up liquid.

Use a clean microfibre cloth to remove dirt, soap residue and any other deposits from the surface. Pay particular attention to areas around the bars, joints and other places where moisture may collect.

Once cleaned, wipe the radiator again using clean water to remove any remaining soap residue. Dry the surface thoroughly with a clean microfibre cloth.

Regular cleaning, ideally around once a week in a bathroom environment, will help keep the finish looking its best and allow you to identify any signs of corrosion at an early stage.

Step 3 - Treat Light Surface Rust

For small areas of surface rust, mix equal parts of white vinegar and water in a suitable container.

Dip a clean microfibre cloth into the solution and gently rub the affected area. Avoid applying excessive pressure, particularly if the chrome surface is already damaged.

For rust around corners, joints or other difficult-to-reach areas, a soft-bristled toothbrush can be used with the same solution.

If required, a small amount of baking soda can be applied to a stubborn area. Leave it for a few minutes before gently wiping it away with a clean, damp cloth.

Important: Avoid abrasive cleaning products or harsh scouring materials, as these can scratch the chrome plating and potentially make the problem worse.

Step 4 - For More Stubborn Rust

If the previous method has not removed the surface rust, aluminium kitchen foil can be used as a further cleaning option.

Take a small piece of aluminium foil, loosely scrunch it into a ball and dampen it with clean water. Gently rub the affected area using light pressure.

The aluminium can help loosen and remove surface rust without being as aggressive to the chrome finish as materials such as steel wool or abrasive scourers.

For particularly stubborn areas, some people use cola instead of water to dampen the foil. If you choose to try this method, make sure the surface is thoroughly rinsed afterwards to remove any residue.

Do not use steel wool, wire brushes or abrasive pads on a chrome towel rail, as these can scratch the plating and expose the metal underneath.

Step 5 - Rinse and Dry

Once you have finished treating the affected areas, rinse the towel rail thoroughly using clean water and a soft sponge or microfibre cloth.

Make sure that all cleaning solution and loosened rust residue has been removed.

The towel rail should then be dried completely using a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Taking the time to dry the surface properly will help prevent water marks, streaks and further moisture-related corrosion.

Step 6 - Polish the Chrome Finish

As a final step, use a clean, dry microfibre cloth to gently buff the chrome surface.

Work in small circular movements until the finish is clean and free from streaks. This will help restore the shine and leave your towel rail looking as clean as possible.

What if the Rust Cannot be Removed?

If rust has been present for an extended period, or if the chrome plating has been significantly damaged, it may not be possible to completely remove the corrosion.

Where the chrome plating has been penetrated and the underlying steel has started to corrode, cleaning may only provide a temporary improvement. In more serious cases, particularly where there are signs of pitting, bubbling chrome or leakage, the towel rail or radiator may need to be replaced.

Regular cleaning and keeping the surface as dry as possible are the best ways to help maintain the appearance and condition of your chrome towel rail over time.
